My name is Miriam. I have always been passionate about working with animals. Prior to my physiotherapy career, I worked at an event and stud yard, riding schools and with many different types of horses from a young age. I have a rescue dog Lucy who is an English Bull Terrier X and we enjoy going for hikes together and to obedience classes.
I qualified as a Veterinary Physiotherapist in 2017 after completing my BSc(Hons) and the Advanced Certificate in Veterinary Physiotherapy at the University of Nottingham. I have been running my business for 6 years now working with both dogs and horses. In 2021 I began my journey with the College of McTimoney studying for my MSc in Animal Manipulation (Chiropractic) and I qualified at the end of 2023. I felt that being able to add chiropractic adjustments into my current sessions would enable me to address additional restrictions in the body to enhance my treatments.
As a therapist I am passionate about animal welfare, educating owners and staying up to date with research that enables me to keep my treatments and advice current with the latest knowledge. For my Masters degree, I completed my own research project investigating the effect of McTimoney treatment on pelvic symmetry in the horse and the efficacy of both ridden and unridden exercise in maintaining these changes post-treatment.
I am based in the Greater Manchester area and treat both dogs and horses.
I am fully insured to undertake both physiotherapy and McTimoney chiropractic treatments. I am a member of The Institute of Registered Veterinary and Animal Physiotherapists (IRVAP) and we share the belief that every animal deserves the best treatment whilst their owners are fully informed and supported.
As per the requirements of my insurance and the that I am registered with I regularly attend CPD courses to continue my learning and keep up to date with current research.
As an animal physiotherapist and chiropractor, I work through Veterinary referral as per The Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966 and Exemptions Order 2015.
At Miriam Sykes Veterinary Physiotherapy, we understand the importance of providing high-quality care for your animals. Miriam is a member of the Register of Animal Musculoskeletal Practitioners (RAMP) which is a register of professionals who take responsibility to maintain gold standards of practice in animal musculoskeletal treatments.
